Precipitation - radar 5 minute forecasted radar reflectivity composites over the Netherlands up to 2 hours ahead
Forecasts of radar reflectivities at 1500 m over the Netherlands and surrounding area measured by two radars in Herwijnen and Den Helder. Forecast interval is 5 minutes, with lead times up to 2 hours.

Radar reflectivities are measured by both radars (Herwijnen at 51,8369 N, 5,1381 E and Den Helder at 52.9533 N, 4.7900 E) in scans with elevation angles of 0.3, 1.1, 2.0, and 3.0 degrees. These scans are used to generate a single image per radar at 1500 m by linearly interpolating radar reflectivities in altitude. These two radar images are then combined to a single image by taking a weighted average of the radar reflectivities. The weigths are a function of the distance of a given point to the radar. Radar reflectivity fields are forecast by extrapolating the current radar field using advection velocitite derived from previous radar reflectivity fields.
