Precipitation - radar/gauge 5-minute ensemble nowcast of precipitation over the Netherlands
Ensemble nowcasts generated using pySTEPS based on 5-minute radar/gauge precipitation intensities. Ensemble nowcasts contain 20 members and are generated for 0-120 minutes lead time, with a time step of 5 minutes. NOTE: this is currently not an operational product, and hence there are no guarantees on its availability.

- Purpose
-
Ensemble nowcasts provide information on uncertainties with the nowcasted precipitation, which is very useful for providing warnings. In addition to this, it is foreseen that this nowcast will replace the existing KNMI radar nowcast.

Radar reflectivities are measured by radars in the Netherlands (Herwijnen and Den Helder) , Belgium (Jabbeke and Houthalen-Helchteren), and Germany (Essen and Borkum). Single images per radar at 1500 m height are generated by linearly interpolating radar reflectivities in altitude. Radar reflectivities are then converted to rainfall intensities by using the Z=200R^1.6 formula. A mean bias correction factor is derived based on the most recent 1 hour rainfall accumulations from automatic rain gauges. The resulting radar rainfall estimates from all radars are then combined to a single product by taking a weighted average. The weigths are a function of the distance of a given point to the radar. These precipitation intensity fields are then used in the pySTEPS algorithm to generate a 20-member ensemble of radar nowcasts with up to 2 hours lead time.
